.. since my last blogpost
... since the last time I posted a black and white editorial
.... since I only wore lingerie on my blog, haha =)

A few weeks ago, I had to present my latest work as part of our intermediate exam at uni and it turned out to be a small magazine with interviews, a fashion series and some other bits and pieces I wanted to be featured.

American author and journalist Chuck Palahniuk once said 'art never comes from happiness' and this quote has been stuck in my brain for quite some time now. To be honest, I have a few friends who seem to work better when they're feeling emotional or really sad and as far as I'm concerned, I am more creative when I feel down. Thus, I concerned myself with the correlation between art and melancholy.

Although, neurologists haven't researched the distinctive link between being creative while being emotional, however a study by US medical student Malinda McPherson definitely confirmed that there is a context which needs to be studied in detail. I mean, I somehow knew that there would be, but of course it's better to have medical proof. Before I started doing my research on this topic, I asked a few friends and acquaintances what their opinion was: almost everybody thought that there are plenty of people who work better while being melancholic. One such example is Yves Saint Laurent, whose happiness was confined to two events a year: his spring/summer collection and his autumn/winter collection.

Besides doing interviews and thinking about how happy Yves Saint Laurent or Alexander McQueen might have been during their lifetime, I also had to shoot a six page fashion series that would carry the weight of my topic. I named it 'Melancholy Hill' and ode to a fitting song by The Gorillaz. In my opinion, living a life of melancholy can be fulfilling to some people and should be respected. Unfortunately the line between unhappiness and depression can be thin.

Coinciding with Valentine's Day, I thought about posting these photos. I hope you like them, let me know what you think in the comment section and have a great, great weekend! xx
